Tad mccarty的tune-o-matic 琴桥(也就是大家所说的ABR-1)最早在1954年开始被装配在高兴好的Gibson吉他上.
ABR1琴桥在1956年成为了Les paul型号的标准配置, 它有可以独立调整每一根琴弦的弦鞍和可以调整整个琴桥高度的转轮, 为琴的音准方面带来了质的飞跃并在音色和延音方面带来了重大进步。

双拾音器的Les Paul Special是1955年推出的一款中档琴, 它的市场定位在低端的Les Paul Junior和Les Paul 标准型之间, 有单切角的款式可选.柠檬黄色桃花心木的Special在1955年变化出了另外一种双切角的型号并且有了樱桃红色.

为了挽救Les Paul型号逐渐下滑的销售额. Gibson放弃了熟悉的金色、开始使用透明的樱桃红日落色, 透过这种透明色可以看见常用在Les Paul上的华丽的枫木贴面. 这款重新改造并命名为Les Paul standard的吉他在1958年开始上市.

1960年, Les Paul Standard仍然使用火焰枫木的贴面和日落色, 以及它的”前辈”一直在使用的”PAF”拾音器.
但是它使用的Slim Taper琴颈却带来非常不同手感.
这些最终的调整并没能成功的挽救Standard,
然后再1960年以后单切角的Les Paul被薄琴体、双切角的SG所取代。
